もともと、、、と、もとをたどっていくと、Newport 1988 へ至る。
ただし、内容はそこで述べられているが、「Less is more.」とは名づけられていない。
そう名付けたのは、Newport 1990。

Namely, that the various perceptual and memorial limitations of the
young child help to promote a successful morphological analysis of the
language, whereas having a less limited set of capabilities may make the analytic
task more difficult. (Newport 1988: 166)

考えてみたら、「音素」というのは、「その言語において他と識別される最小単位」であり、
「形態素」は、「その言語において意味を持つ最小単位（音素の連続）」だ。
　
なので、その言語にとって「不必要」なもの（情報を持たないもの）は、文字通り「意味がない」どころか、ない方がまし、ってことになる。意味のないことまでいちいち付き合ってられないってことだ。
　
で、それは、ニューロンの発達からしたら、つながなくてもよいシナプスであり「選択的刈り込み」が行われる。
